Hornets

Hornets are twice the size of the common wasp and brown and yellow instead of black and yellow. They build nests in hollow trees and similar sites. They only occasionally enter houses. If they do, it’s usually high up in a roof void or at the base of chimneys.

The only species that you are likely to see in the UK is the European hornet. Though they look very intimidating due to their size they are probably less aggressive than the common wasp. Their stings can still present danger though and they will get defensive around their nest. If you suspect a hornets nest and it’s in a position that could be dangerous to your safety we certainly recommend that you get the nest treated and/or removed.

As with wasps, never attempt to deal with the problem yourself as you are placing yourself in immediate danger. We are trained and equipped to treat hornets nests even if they are high up and have all the protective equipment and years of experience. If after treatment the nest is still active after one week we will return free of charge for a further treatment.
