In the UK, native spiders are not considered dangerous, or a threat to health but some households suffer from ‘nuisance’ house spiders, and because of common fears (arachnophobia), many require pest control.
The False widow spider generally gets the most concern however most of the fears around these various species of spider are mostly exaggerated.
Although false widows do have a venomous bite, the venom is not particularly potent. Usually the only symptom is pain at the site which may radiate away from the bite. It ordinarily lasts between one and 12 hours, and rarely for more than 24 hours. Often, the symptoms are no worse than the pain of a wasp sting. The extreme side effects that are occasionally experienced are most likely the result of a secondary infection, likely bacterial, if the wound is not kept clean.
When we treat for spiders we will survey the area to identify the species and make a judgement on the necessary treatment. This will usually involve the destruction of webs, particularly externally around windows and doors followed by an insecticidal spray or fogging (natural organic insecticide for external areas). Remember though, without spiders your homes will be full of other unwanted flies and insects!
